It sounds like Meech might be the next to be waived…
One-way ticket? – Red Wings Snapshots – MLive.com The Windsor Star’s Bob Duff discusses the roster pickle that Red Wings swingman Derek Meech finds himself in, suggesting that Meech will probably join Buffalo Sabres forward Matt Ellis and Los Angeles Kings defenceman Kyle Quincey as a casualty of Detroit’s tremendous organizational depth. Meech knows that his status as a part-time player can’t last forever:
Quincey was claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Kings today. The Detroit Free Press has some info regarding the move.
October 13, Detroit Free Press: “It’s another challenge and hopefully a good opportunity for myself,” Quincey said. “I’ll just try to make the best of it.”Given that he is only a $525,000 hit against the cap, it’s hardly a surprise he was claimed.
“We expected it,” general manager Ken Holland said. “We’d talked to five, six teams the last week that had some interest. I thought we were close on one front on a deal that fell through. In the end, we really decided to put him on waivers because we wanted to have flexibility with the cap.”
The move makes it possible to activate Darren McCarty. McCarty is on short-term injury reserve because of a groin injury, but he skated Monday for the first time since getting hurt and said he feels better.
The Macomb Daily also has some info:
October 13, RedWingsCorner: General manager Ken Holland said that the Red Wings don’t have immediate plans to add a player to their roster. Without Quincey, the Wings still don’t have enough cap room to fit a higher salaried played like Jonathan Ericsson or Ville Leino under the cap. There is enough room, however, for Darren McCarty, who practiced for the first time today since being sidelined with a groin strain, or for a lower salaried minor-leaguer.”I’m not going to call somebody up just to sit in the press box,” said Holland. “We may as well play the games and see if we have anybody get hurt.”
Quincey was on the RBC Center ice this morning for the Red Wings’ practice. At the end, he was called over to the side of the ice where Holland told him about the Kings’ waiver claim.
“Hopefully I get a chance to play and start my career,” said Quincey. “It’s hard to leave all the good guys here. It’s like a family here. It’s always great when you’re winning.”
I am sad to see Kyle go. With any luck he’ll be able to get some good ice time out there. This also reminds me of another player that the Kings claimed off from waivers from the Red Wings, but I just cannot remember who it was. I think it was near the start of last season.
-UPDATE-
Matt Ellis is the player that I couldn’t think of. He was claimed off waivers by LA in February 2008. He was then claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Sabres on October 1st, 2008.
